The theme was 'The Ancients' as we were also part of a project looking at Ancient woodland that term too. BC and AD were discussed many times...a difficult concept but one which also lends itself to having a deeper understanding of the chronology of the history of the world - who was living and exploring at the same time as who.....big questions but 9 and 10 year olds are always up for big questions. Never underestimate what they can do.
Together we became experts on Greek gods and goddesses, debated whether we should return the Elgin marbles to Greece, investigated Ancient number systems and went on to crack codes as a result. Children really, genuinely returned homework and worked very hard on their comparison project. They were asked, as a 'creative learning outcome' to present their findings on the differences and similarities between childhood now and in Ancient Greek times. The Ancient Guild-the 'expert organistion' the children were part of to explore this theme-then opened its doors during the last week of term and the experts were on hand to share their findings. They could choose whatever form they wanted to present; books, power points, posters etc. Visitors were treated to their enthusiasm about the subject. One parent said that, thanks for the Ancients and Percy Jackson his son had started reading fiction and was working his way through the next books.
